Font & cut file formats: what each craft app accepts

Which font files and cut files each app opens, from the makers’ own help pages. Pick your app to see only its column.

What “Via OS”, “Limited” and the other marks mean
  • Yes the maker’s help says it works
  • No the maker’s help says it does not
  • Paid only needs a paid plan or edition
  • Limited works with a catch (see the cell)
  • Via OS no font upload: the app uses fonts installed in Windows, macOS or iPadOS
  • Not documented we found no official statement either way

  • Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio and XCS use the fonts installed in your operating system. So “installing a font for Cricut” means installing it in the operating system (steps below).
  • Canva wants TTF, OTF or WOFF on a paid plan. WOFF2 and zipped fonts are refused, and variable fonts aren’t supported.
  • Procreate imports TTF, OTF and TTC directly — no system install needed.

  • Free Silhouette Studio Basic can’t open SVG; use DXF, or upgrade to Designer Edition.
  • Design Space on a phone or tablet can’t open DXF; use SVG. PDF isn’t on Design Space’s upload list at all.
  • Glowforge and xTool drop live text inside an uploaded file, and Cricut and Canva want it outlined too — convert text to paths first.

Install a font so it shows up in Cricut Design Space

Design Space has no font upload: next to Cricut’s own fonts it lists the system fonts installed on your computer or device, and a filter in the font list shows one group or the other. Silhouette Studio and xTool Creative Space work the same way.

Windows 10 / 11

  1. Unzip the download — Windows installs .ttf and .otf files.
  2. Right-click the font file and choose Install, or Install for all users.
  3. Open Design Space, add text, and look under System fonts in the font list.

Installed fonts can be checked or removed in Settings › Personalization › Fonts. Microsoft notes that not every app supports custom fonts.

macOS

  1. Double-click the font file in Finder and click Install.
  2. Or drag it onto Font Book, or use File › Add Fonts to Current User.
  3. Font Book checks the font for errors and duplicates while installing.

Font Book accepts TTF (including variable TTF), OTF (including OpenType-SVG color fonts), TTC and OpenType collections.

iPad / iPhone

  1. Apple’s route is an App Store app that contains fonts: install it and open it to add its fonts.
  2. Check them in Settings › General › Fonts.
  3. Some font apps use a configuration profile; iPadOS asks first, and lists it under VPN & Device Management.

Deleting a profile also removes the fonts it installed.

Android: no official route found Cricut says the Android app lists fonts installed on the device, but we found no official, device-independent way to install a downloaded .ttf or .otf on Android. If you have a computer, Design Space for Windows or Mac is the documented path.

Using xTool Creative Space? After installing, fully close and reopen XCS before the font appears. In xTool Studio you can also upload a font file to My Uploads instead.

Drawing, foiling or engraving with a Cricut? Cricut recommends single-line fonts, found with the Writing Style filter. A regular filled font is traced along its outline, so the letters come out looking hollow, like bubble letters. Cricut doesn’t say whether a font you install yourself can get the Writing style.

Fonts with swashes and alternates hide them in extra characters. The font glyph viewer shows every glyph in a file so you can copy the one you want.

Variable fonts: one file, many weights

A variable font packs a whole range of weights (and sometimes widths) into one file. Drag the sliders — this is a single file of Fredoka, an SIL OFL font bundled with this site.

Sending text to a cutter or laser: turn it into paths

An SVG can hold “live” text that still needs the font to display. The receiving app often doesn’t have that font, so the text disappears or is refused:

The bubble letter, graffiti letter and cursive SVG generators on this site export text that is already converted to filled paths — no live text, clipping paths or images. The files are calculated, not machine-tested, so do a small test cut first.

Where Creative Fabrica fonts fit

Creative Fabrica delivers its fonts as OTF and/or TTF files; web-font formats such as WOFF come only with its Enterprise License. That means the Windows and Mac steps above apply as-is for Design Space, Silhouette Studio and XCS, and the files are formats Canva accepts on a paid plan.

Looking for fonts to install? Creative Fabrica’s font library has a Cricut fonts tag, and its craft files section has ready-made SVG cut files.

A format that loads is not the same as a license that allows your use. Canva, for example, needs a font licensed for embedding, and selling products has its own rules — see font licenses for sellers, Canva fonts and commercial use and the Creative Fabrica license summary, or read a file’s embedded license with the font license checker.

Not legal advice: read the font’s own license before you sell.
